The state senator said a recent warning from a state official about ongoing health risks from asbestos at the East Rockhill facilty prompted his call for action.
The inactive Rockhill Quarry in East Rockhill should be permanently closed, state Sen. Steve Santarsiero, D-10, of Lower Makefield, said Friday.
Santarsiero, whose legislative district includes East Rockhill, said a state official’s warning of health risks from asbestos at the quarry prompted him to call for permanent closure and a meeting of state health and environmental officials as soon as possible in order to protect East Rockhill residents.
Quarrying work at the site, which is north of the Pennridge Airport, resumed for the first time in decades in February 2018 but was stopped again in December of that year on orders from the state Department of Environmental Protection after asbestos was discovered.
A letter from Raphael Barishansky, deputy secretary of health preparedness and community protection at the state health department, raised Santarsiero’s concerns.
